Choate Rosemary Hall seeks an Archivist for the Andrew Mellon Library to begin at the start of the 2021-2022 school year.  The purpose of the role is to select, preserve, arrange, and catalogue the collection; to answer inquiries from both internal and external parties; and, to promote the collections.  The Library provides both contemplative and collaborative spaces for all users with a collection containing over 190,000 books and e-books, over 50 scholarly databases as well as newspapers, magazines, DVDs, and streaming video services, along with a copy of course textbooks on reserve. 

This is a full-time, benefits eligible position that runs during the academic, school year.


Job duties include:

  • Responsible for the curation, preservation, administration, and the promotion of the physical and digital archives.
  • Identify, sort, and classify archive material for preservation and accessibility.
  • Catalogue existing records and new accessions: the creation, management, and maintenance of up-to-date structured finding aids, classification systems and access points on appropriate archive software, ensuring that national descriptive standards are followed.
  • Respond to inquiries from alumni, the school community, and members of the public, both in person and remotely with exceptional customer service.
  • Promote the Archive collections through online and on campus exhibits, publications, presentations, classroom sessions, and other outreach activities.
  • Develops policies and/or procedures and directly manages the acquisition, disposition, access to, and safekeeping of archival materials.
  • Maintains the inventory of the school's fine art, rare book, and furnishings collections. 



  • Master’s degree in library, archival, or information studies OR a master’s degree in liberal arts/humanities and successful completion of archival training.
  • Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA) certification and formal experience in an archival institution OR an archival certification will be considered as an exception to the requirement for a master’s degree.
  • 3-5 years of experience with archival and library systems, including developing and managing systems in a collaborative environment.
  • A strong background in archival theory and practice, especially regarding arrangement and description, as well as a familiarity with current approaches to born-digital materials.
  • Experience working in a secondary school environment.
